0842----1829 Harvey Leavitt attorney lawsuit letter - Vergennes VT Hartford VT
    Description
Original 1829 letter from "J.O. Williams" of the merchant firm "Williams & Wadsworth" of Richmond VA
to attorney Harvey F. Leavitt in Hartford VT. Leavitt would later become a very well known clergyman in Vergennes VT, but at this time was a practicing attorney and had graduated from Yale in 1816. He was born in Hartford VT in 1796 and died in Iowa in 1874.
The letter is 2 pages and addressed to Leavitt in Hartford. It is in VG condition with natural folds.
The letter concerns a lawsuit that Leavitt is handling for the merchants in Richmond.   It was fairly difficult to read at first, but after learning the writing style,  I was able to decipher about 90% and have transcribed below.  Also, please review an amazingly detailed obit I found from the Vergennes Vermonter, 1874.

Dear Sir Yours of the 19
    th
arrived ---you will please to know that if Mr. ?? has paid any money for us it has been without any knowledge or consent so far as we know and we did suppose the laws of your State allowed certain fixed allowances for witnesses. We are viewing Mr. ?? should be paid as a witness but we know nothing of his advancing money ???? advances ?? to be paid by Mr. Wales account of his lien against us be correct – having made your ?? in this business -- do this – Offer Mr. Pr?? as much as you think has a right to receive – if dissatisfied let the suit go on -- Return as much in your hands as will cover the suit and send me the Bal. as before proposed – you will probably find some of your merchants going to New York or Boston by whom to remit
    (end of page 1)
And if you find a chance of sending to New York the money may be paid over there into the hands of Wadsorth & Williams – if Mr ?? can show you from under our hands that he was empowered to advance money for us or to receive the whole amount and charge a commission and you find that his charges are founded on justice and not with a view of getting more than justice entitles him to – divide accordingly – the whole business not intending to call your name in question, looks like taking the skin off – We might almost as well have lost the suit as won it – We have not received a letter from Mr. ?? and do not wish to – please answer as soon as you can and remit me as soon as possible – perhaps some other person may want a part of the funds --- Yours respectfully J.O. Williams
