    The site was previously used by Madison Cottage,

    which was a
    stagecoach
    stop for passengers headed north from the city. From 1853 to 1856 it was then used by Franconi's Hippodrome, a tent-like structure of canvas and wood which could accommodate up to 10,000 spectators who watched chariot races and other "Amusements of the Ancient Greeks and Romans".
