ANTIQUE ITALIAN 9K GOLD SHELL CAMEO BROOCH PENDANT GUARDIAN ANGEL & FLOWER c1860

Description

This superb antique Guardian Angel cameo is hand carved from a single piece of bull's mouth shell, and is mounted in solid 9 carat gold for wear as a brooch or a pendant.
The carving is lovely, combining naive country style with renaissance influence. The detail to the clouds and the angel's clothing is regular enough to almost become a pattern, focusing the attention, and the framing is perfect - a touch of space to the upper left in front of the subject, allows it to breathe and to concentrate on the face of the angel.
There is a gold safety chain to the back that can be replaced by a hanging ring to allow wear as a pendant. It's proudly signed to the back by the artist 'Pavolini' and dates to around 1870. It's an ideal size at 2" x 1.75" and the frame is stamped '9ct' to the back, for solid 9 carat gold.
It's in very good, fully wearable condition, with light high detail wear, but no cracks, loss etc. It weighs 14.1 grams.
