    Description

Listed here is a somewhat rare letter written to Major William Worrell Vass (1829-1896) of Raleigh, North Carolina, from J. M. Pugh (b. ca. 1817) from Morrisville, North Carolina dated June 8, 1877. Vass was a native of Granville County, North Carolina and was a Confederate major during the Civil War and served as treasurer of the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad for many years. The earliest photograph of a locomotive in North Carolina includes an image of Vass standing on the engine about 1850. Vass is buried in Oakwood Cemetery. Pugh was a dry goods merchant at Cedar Fork, Wake County, North Carolina (New Hill). The letter, concerning the sale of the Bagwell Lands, is in fragile condition. Good luck.
