Description
This is a wonderful rare Victorian (circa 1870-1880) carved layered agate cameo depicting Arethusa. Arethusa from Greek mythology was a nymph and daughter of Nereus who fled from her home in Arcadia beneath the sea and came up as a fresh water spring on the island of Ortygia in Sicily. She is shown here with her attribute the dolphin which makes this an extra rare cameo. The cameo is in excellent condition and is mounted in a beautiful 18k (tested) brooch frame. The brooch measures 1 and 1/2 inches by 1 and 5/16 inches. Good agate cameos are much harder to find than other materials and this is a subject not often found. A wonderful addition to any collection!
