    Description

    This old cameo features Psyche, with the usual butterfly wing stuck in her hair.  This gal was born a mortal, but after a lot of plot -- including abductions, forced marriages and bitchy sisters -- she ended up in Olympus, the Goddess of the Soul.
    The ring is, as you can tell from the photos, very old and shows plenty of wear.  Based on the ring's design and the style of the cameo's face, I'm guessing this ring was made between 1870 and 1900.
    The bezel has a hand-engraved rim with a scored design, and the plain, narrow band attaches to the ring's face with cool little claw-like flourishes.
    The cameo is carnelian (aka cornelian) shell.  Those brown spots on Psyche's hairdo are natural pigmentation in the shell, not stains.
    The ring's face measures 25mm x 21mm (that's just under 1" x just over 3/4").  The cameo measures 16mm x 11m.
    The band is 1.7mm wide and 1mm thick.
    According to the mandrel, this ring is a size 6.5, but it fits more like a 7.5 because the face is long and the inside is concave.
    Any marks have been sized or worn away.  I did an acid test and the metal is at least 14K gold.
    The ring weight is 5.2 grams.  The estimated gold weight is around 4.5 grams.
